Work Plan 2018


Executive Committee

Goal: Provide effective, efficient governance of the Chamber


  • Conduct onboarding process for newly elected board members
  • Lead annual review of executive director


Goal: Ensure adequate financial resources to implement the annual plan of work and maintain minimum 6-month reserves. 


  • Establish annual operating budget
  • Develop compensation plan to include cost of living and benefits competitive within industry trends
  • Consider capital improvements that will increase efficiency and/or enable the staff to generate additional income

Ex: creating intern work area, board room projection technology, upgrading ChamberMaster  

  • Advise on a tiered dues structure for targeted 2019 rollout
  • Advise on updated credit card processing systems
  • Develop a 3- and 5-year financial projection

Membership Services

Goal:  Maintain an 85% retention rate


  • Develop and implement a relationship management plan
  • Assess the effectiveness of the monthly payment option for membership dues
  • Reduce dues collection times through early billing
  • Aim recruitment efforts at non-domicile businesses that conduct business in F-V
  • Utilize ChamberMaster software to track member engagement and benefits usage
  • Research opportunities to increase engagement with minority businesses owners/managers
  • Connect with members at semi-annual Chairman’s luncheons
  • Host twice monthly networking events: Business After Hours and Wake Up breakfasts
  • Re-introduce Chamber 101 classes and update content to include mobile app
  • Plan annual membership appreciation and awards to recognize business achievement


Goal:  Utilize the talents and business relationships of Ambassadors to help build the Chamber brand and connect with members


  • Recruit 2 new ambassadors
  • Execute an orientation for new ambassadors
  • Create a resource link/page on the Chamber website to increase ambassador efficiency
  • Assess the need for electronic ambassadors and appoint those ambassadors, if applicable

Young Professionals of Fuquay-Varina

Goal:  Engage a young demographic (under 40) to ensure the future viability of the F-V Chamber of Commerce, recognize F-V as an ideal place for young professionals, and increase social and professional opportunities for young professionals


  • Establish organizational structure of the group
  • Increase membership and visibility of the group
  • Create networking opportunities through social and community events
  • Create opportunities for professional development
  • Implement programs to recognize and highlight achievements of young professionals in F-V
  • Educate young professionals on opportunities within the Chamber to increase their influence and promote Chamber membership
  • Drive community engagement through service programs

Small Business Development

Goal: Create and nurture a supportive environment in which small businesses can grow and thrive.


  • Utilize the partnership agreement with SBTDC to serve inquiries from new business prospects
  • Build relationship with Campbell University business and engineering schools to provide professional opportunities for students and strengthen efforts to support new businesses
  • Conduct Business Retention and Expansion visits on targeted industries and communicate findings with Town Economic Development Department – take action as deemed appropriate
  • Communicate the results of the Incubator Viability Study with stakeholders and use the report as a guide to help determine future course of action
  • Explore resources for assessing the needs of established small businesses
  • Provide educational workshops/seminars/forums in conjunction with Wake Tech Small Business Center
  • Provide notary public training courses in conjunction with Wake Tech Small Business Center
  • Recruit qualified volunteer business mentors
  • Conduct commercial real estate tour
  • Present Business Expo

Innovate Fuquay-Varina

Goal:  Develop a thriving entrepreneurial culture


  • Secure corporate sponsorship of the IFV program
  • Offer quality educational and training opportunities to prepare participants for launch weekend
  • Provide ongoing support to participants following launch weekend
  • Track progress of startups and communicate achievements
  • Increase awareness of the program
  • Develop relationships with other area entrepreneurial programs, explore possible collaborations and shared resources
  • Identify and reach out to potential angel investors to generate interest in local entrepreneurial ventures


Goal: Ensure high visibility and consistent, professional branding of the Chamber. Ensure value driven messaging to membership and stakeholders.


  • Engage marketing committee: 1. in raising sponsorship to finance the mobile app; 2. in maintaining design, function and content of mobile app
  • Provide promotional support to special events and fundraising committees as needed
  • Complete member benefits infographic to support membership development efforts
  • Assist in creation of printed and online tools to support new tiered dues structure once adopted
  • Support staff in improving navigation of website

Public Affairs

Governmental Affairs

Goal:  Represent the voice of business members with elected officials.


  • Recruit committee representation from a wide range of community sectors
  • Keep members informed of legislative issues that impact their business
  • Produce a voter’s guide, host candidate forums for the community and encourage voter registration
  • Host local, county and state elected officials at February Business After Hours
  • Encourage member communication with elected officials
  • Meet with Southwest Wake Chambers governmental affairs groups to address topics of mutual interest
  • Increase participation in Regional Transportation Alliance to stay informed of issues and strengthen relationships with leaders in Wake County

Education Council

Goal: Serve as a clearinghouse of information regarding educational issues and facilitate a vital relationship between local schools and businesses.


  • Represent Fuquay-Varina’s concerns and needs through active participation with the Wake Education Partnership
  • Implement quarterly excellence in education award in conjunction with Business After Hours
  • Maintain exchange of information between businesses and local schools at Business Alliance meetings
  • Encourage increased business and community support of local schools through volunteer service, monetary and supply donations
  • Support F-V High School FBLA with internships, mentoring and job shadowing opportunities
  • Coordinate with Governmental Affairs committee on advocacy efforts in support of the 2018 bond referendum for school capital needs

Community Development

Goal:  Actively work to sustain and promote the community’s quality of life.

 Leadership Fuquay-Varina

Goal: Provide education and training for future community leaders


  • Track and report demonstrated success of Leadership graduates
  • Continue efforts to build a strong alumni group
  • Create a network for alumni service projects in government, civic, nonprofit and other entities
  • Communicate with leadership programs at other chamber’s to ensure vitality and innovation within the F-V program
  • Advise, as requested, the Business Alliance in developing a Youth Leadership Program at FVHS

Senior Services Council

Goal:  Address the need for services for this growing and underserved population


  • Present Senior Services Expo
  • Support the Active Adult Task Force in their mission to establish a Senior Services Center


Special Events

Goal:  Use special events that highlight Fuqua-Varina as a great place to live and do business as a way to generate non dues revenue.



  • Plan and produce profitable events that have value for Chamber members and the community including Run The Quay, Savor Fuquay-Varina and the Christmas Parade
  • Oversee the Merchant Village component of the Freedom Balloon Festival
