Eating Well on a Limited Grocery Budget

The Community Market Co-op & Fuquay-Varina Parks & Recreation Co-host Free Community Workshop

Fuquay-Varina, NC-May 12, 2015 – Eating a healthy, nutritious meal can have many obstacles for people, but money should not be one of them. As recently as 2014, 46 million people were on SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) and millions more live on limited grocery budgets.

To help with this daily challenge, The Community Market Co-op is co-hosting “Good & Cheap: Eating Well on a Limited Budget”, a FREE community event, with the Fuquay-Varina Parks & Recreation Department on Saturday, May 30, 2015, 10:00am12:00pm at the Fuquay-Varina Community Center. Professional Chef, Cherisse Byers of FoodamentallySound.com will provide cooking demonstrations, tips and food tastings during the event. Based on the cookbook Good & Cheap: Eat Well on $4/Day by Leanne Brown, this program will showcase how to cook simple, nutritious and good-tasting food for just a few dollars a day, how to shop seasonally to extend your grocery budget and which pantry staples to stock in the kitchen.

Designed for people on tight budgets, particularly those who receive SNAP benefits, Ms. Brown’s book focuses on how to cook with whole foods without relying on over-processed foods that are low in nutrition and, contrary to popular belief, can actually cost more. The book also serves as a resource of ideas, delicious recipes and helpful tips for those looking to feed themselves or their family healthy foods.

In addition to the demo and food sampling, various door prizes, such as copies of the Good & Cheap cookbook, gift baskets of cooking supplies donated by volunteers and supporters of The Community Market Co-op, and tokens from the Fuquay-Varina Grower’s Market will be given away during the event. All attendees will have a chance to win, but those who pre-register will be entered into the drawing twice.

The event will be held at the Fuquay-Varina Community Center at 820 S. Main St. Fuquay Varina, NC, 27526 in the Jimmy Johnson Room. To register for this FREE event, contact Fuquay-Varina Parks & Recreation at 919-552-1430. Seating is limited to the first 80 attendees who register.
